It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of former performer, board member, and ardent supporter Ralph L. Katz on Monday July 26, 2021.
Ralph joined the Society in 1974 and performed until 2011 giving us a quintessential bass/baritone lead as Shadbolt, The Pirate King, Mikado, Sergeant of Police, and many more. His support went beyond the stage where he served on the Board of Directors for many years as our head of production. He could also be seen delighting audiences with his broad repertoire of musical numbers from shows such as Fiddler on the Roof and Les Misérables. Whether serving as Cantor at Congregation Beth El, huddled around a piano at our Patrons Parties, or front and center at the Wortham Theater, when Ralph performed, people couldn’t help but watch, listen and be happy.
Ralph and his wife Carol have been friends of my mother’s since well before I was around. “Uncle Ralph” was a tremendous role model, mentor, advisor, and friend both in G&S and in life. Ralph was kind, fun and wise all while making a quick joke. He never judged, just listened, and offered a nugget of wisdom to help anyone who needed it. His love for the Society and his family and friends leaves us a clear roadmap for happiness in life: cherish the good times, learn from the bad, and make tomorrow a better day.
Our condolences go out to Carol and their entire family. We will miss him dearly but celebrate the glad memories we have of our time together. If you would like to send a note to the family, they can be sent to [email protected] and I will be happy to pass those along. There was a small private ceremony this morning for family to say their final good-byes.
Barukh atah Adonai Eloheinu melekh ha'olam, dayan ha-emet.
